Weeks after it launched a long range missile amid calls for it not to, North Korea is set to be hit by new expanded sanctions signed off by President Barrack Obama.
North Korea has refused to stop its nuclear programme which is strictly being frowned at by the United Nations and other world powers and that fact made it easy for the U.S. Congress to pass the bill for sanctions against the East Asian country.
The morning after that launch, Mr Obama said: “This is an authoritarian regime. It’s provocative. It has repeatedly violated UN resolutions, tested and produced nuclear weapons, and now they are trying to perfect their missile launch system.”
The expanded sanctions is expected to cut off funds North Korea has been using to develop its miniaturised nuclear warheads with China saying some of the measures could cripple North Korea’s economy.
Meanwhile, The US and China are negotiating over a UN Security Council resolution on new sanctions for Pyongyang.
