SON Impounds 10,000 Substandard, Used Tyres In Kaduna

Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) has impounded more than 10,000 used and substandard tyres in Kaduna. The tyres were seized after SON raided shops in new Panteka market and along Katsina road in Kaduna metropolis on Wednesday. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), nine shops were also sealed during the raid coordinated by SON, Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Federal Road safety Corps. Alhaji Adamu Abba, SON Acting Zonal Coordinator, said the raid was meant to rid the market of products injurious to the health and well being of Nigerians. “This type of business is dangerous to lives of Nigerians and must be checked, you can all bear witness of the number of people who died because of used and substandard tyres,” Abba said. “All those used and substandard tyres were smuggled into the country, they didn’t come through normal process,” he noted. He said that the inspection would continue, adding that “violators will be prosecuted and the used, substandard tyres impounded will be destroyed.” The zonal officer said that SON would build synergy with critical stakeholders to stop circulation of substandard products in Nigerian markets.
