– Students want their VC probed over corrupt practices
– They also tasked the federal government with provision of decent hostels for them
Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun state, have tasked President Muhammadu Buhari with the responsibility of probing their Vice Chancellor, Professor Bamitale Omole.
This message was passed to the president through Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s minister of Information and Culture, during a recent visit to the institution to deliver a lecture titled ‘Nexus between corruption and underdevelopment of Nigeria’.
President Muhammadu Buhari has been asked to extend his anti-graft war to the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) campus. |
Lai Mohammed, the former spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC), was at the university’s Faculty of Arts in the institution where the students had staged series of protest against poor condition of their hostels which led to the closure of the school by the management late last year.
One of the students who was allowed to ask the minister a question, said: “Our halls of residence are in bad shape and my colleagues are saying probe Omole (VC) and so on.
“It is not only at the national level that the government should concentrate its fight against corruption, it should come to universities and we welcome President Buhari’s war against corruption on OAU campus.”
While promising to see the VC to discuss the issues being raised by the students, the minister urged Nigerians to support the government in the fight because corruption had already started fighting back.
Alhaji Mohammed also recently reacted to reports that the president’s anti-corruption war was one-sided as he explained that the present administration is committed to fighting corruption to a standstill and any Nigerian, irrespective of tribe of party affiliation, found to have soiled his hands with public fund would be brought to book.
