Nurturing a relationship at the best of times is a challenge. But when
it involves physical separation between you and your beloved, every day
seems to drag on and every a night a torture to go through. Yet who
knows better than you the sense of keen anticipation when the moment of
meeting draws near or the feeling of quiet fulfillment in the knowledge
that though apart you are joined in your hearts. Here are a few
quotations that might inspire you to hope and keep the faith in a long
distance relationship which comes with its unique pains and pleasures.
A quote from Kay Knudsen seems to express exactly what it means to be
in a long distance relationship. “Love is missing someone whenever
you're apart, but somehow feeling warm inside because you're close in
heart”.
And yet on those dreary days and long nights when you miss your
beloved the most, something akin to the following quotation probably
runs through your mind, "Missing you could turn from pain to pleasure,
if I knew you were missing me too." Here is another one from Lamartine
which rings so true, "Sometimes, when one person is missing, the whole
world seems depopulated." Many a man when separated from his sweetheart
must have felt the bitter truth of the following words from Edward
Thomas, “The simple lack of hers is more to me than others' presence.”
Echoing the same feeling of misery are these words of Pam Brown, “Odd
how much it hurts when a friend moves away - and leaves behind only
silence.” And what could express the despondence of a lover more clearly
than these words from Emily Dickinson, “Morning without you is dwindled
dawn”.
Pick up the phone perhaps and think, “Because I love you and I miss
you, hearing your voice is the closest thing to touching you."
And on all those nights when you cannot bear the loneliness, seek
comfort in dreams of each other. How aptly Bill Watterson says, "I think
we dream so we don't have to be apart so long. If we're in each other's
dreams, we can play together all night." Another anonymous quotation
puts it so well, “If the only place where I could see you was in my
dreams, I'd sleep forever.”
In the midst of it all when you sense your partner’s love from afar,
these words of Judy Garland seem to express exactly what you feel, "For
it was not into my ear you whispered, but into my heart. It was not my
lips you kissed, but my soul”.
And when you feel that you have enough of this difficult relationship and can’t bear any more loneliness when others around you are enjoying themselves, probably you feel like giving up. But then nothing is easy when you are in love, as H.L. Mencken says "Love is like war: easy to begin but very hard to stop." You feel you can defy those who express doubts about your relationship for after all, "Love” according to Mark Overby “is much like a wild rose, beautiful and calm, but willing to draw blood in its defense." Also as Zola Neale Hurston says, "Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place" and exult in its courage and beauty.
You then realize how much strength there is in your relationship as
Khalil Gibran says, “And ever has it been known that love knows not its
own depth until the hour of separation.”
So even if the separation seems endless and the time of reunion ages
away, take heart from these words spoken by one of the most graceful
personalities of our times, Audrey Hepburn, "The best thing to hold onto
in life is each other."
And when you do that, you feel truth of the words in the following quotation,
“A part of you has grown in me.
And so you see, it's you and me
Together forever and never apart,
Maybe in distance, but never in heart"
And so you see, it's you and me
Together forever and never apart,
Maybe in distance, but never in heart"
Moreover why should the sensory aspect be more important than the
emotional one? like these words from Helen Keller put it so beautifully,
“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even
touched. They must be felt with the heart."
Brush away all your feelings of loneliness in the LDR with these pity
words, “We are the perfect couple, we're just not in the perfect
situation."
But then again what better way to test the durability of your love
than by physical distance? These famous words from Francois de la
Rouchefoucauld are enough to remind you that “Absence diminishes small
loves and increases great ones, as the wind blows out the candle and
blows up the bonfire.” The same sentiment finds echoes in the words of
Roger de Bussy-Rabutin too, “Absence is to love as wind is to fire; it
extinguishes the small and kindles the great.” And eventually, "Missing
someone gets easier everyday because even though you are one day further
from the last time you saw them, you are one day closer to the next
time you will."
Take comfort in George Eliot’s wise words as she seeks recourse to
happy memories in order to tide over the pain of physical separation,
“What greater thing is there for two human souls that to feel that they
are joined... to strengthen each other... to be at one with each other
in silent unspeakable memories.
Sooner or later the moment of meeting will dawn and you will be with
your beloved. Imagine the love and the joy in store for you as Nicholas
Rowe says, “The joy of meeting pays the pangs of absence; else who could
bear it?"
And when at last long you gaze into the eyes of your beloved, you
feel as if these words from the Oriental sage Rabindranath Tagore were
written just for you, "I seem to have loved you in numberless forms,
numberless times, in life after life, in age after age forever."
